Internal corrosion remains one of the major concerns for pipeline integrity. According to PHMSA1, “internal corrosion accounts for approximately 60% of all pipeline incidents caused by corrosion in transmission and gathering pipelines. For example, during the 5-year period of 2013-2017, approximately 12% of incidents on gas transmission, gas gathering, and hazardous liquid pipelines were caused by internal corrosion. In 2021, internal corrosion accounted for 13.9% of the failures resulting in $17MM in damages and 4,500 barrels spilled.”
