Introducing Data Mart, CIM's New Data Hub
4:58

CIM is known as an analysis engine, a tool for users to conduct in-depth analyses on their inline inspection and now Closer Interval Survey (CIS) data. Assessment data is uploaded into CIM whereby users conduct analyses on said data, select which anomalies to evaluate, upload repair data, perform ILI system performance validation, etc... Additionally, many CIM customers have integrated their GIS transferring a wealth of asset information into CIM. All in all, CIM stores a wide array of data.

Enter Data Mart. A data integration and visualization tool where a vast array of your company-specific pipeline and integrity data has been aggregated into one place, so that users can query the data to generate tables, visuals and customized reports in any way they see fit. The best part? It’s not a static data set. With the data being refreshed nightly, your integrity data and subsequent reports are “live,” thereby providing you with an understanding of your integrity program in real time.

Data is the new…

“What does the data tell us?”

To loosely quote one of our favorite people in the industry, “If you want to improve your pipeline integrity program, look at the data. Look at what the data tells you.”

The impetus of the Data Mart is to allow CIM users to query their own data and obtain answers to questions like “What pipeline has had the most corrosion on the long seam identified? What’s my Action and Repair % for dents per pipeline, division, or entire company? Have hard spots been identified on any of my pipelines? Have my required digs from 2024 been repaired and repair information uploaded?”

Not only can Data Mart help users become more efficient, but they can learn more about their pipelines and pipeline integrity program, and therefore make subsequent improvements. It’s providing data integration on a different scale and in real time.

In case you missed it, here’s a video overview of the Data Mart that was featured in our Q3 newsletter.

Data Mart = PowerBI

In CIM’s next release, 3.43, Data Mart will be accessible through Reports > Preview. The Data Mart is a PowerBI report powered by a large amount of data. Once in Edit Mode, the CIM user can edit or create reports, utilizing the Data, Visualizations and Filter panes. The Data Pane is where all the data sources are listed. Here, the CIM user can select any data point from which to create a table or visual. Additional tabs in the Data Mart provide information on how the data sources are related in a way that allows for meaningful visuals to be created.

A (Data) Management Tool

OneBridge Solutions (OBS) recently hosted their User Group meeting where OBS employees and customers could present on how CIM is being utilized to solve problems. One operator mentioned that CIM not only provides value in analyzing data but helps him understand the integrity of his system in real-time, which is especially helpful given their smaller pipeline integrity department. CIM can surface where the deficiencies/anomalies are present but also what data has been input and therefore what tasks have been completed.

We couldn’t help but think about how Data Mart could help in this manner, especially given the ability to generate real-time reports on integrity-related activities such as assessments uploaded, analyses completed, digs identified, number of anomalies repaired, etc. Indeed, one of the example visuals built in Data Mart internally was a matrix table providing the number of inline inspections, digs, anomalies, repairs and verification features with color coding to indicate that the values met certain thresholds, identified by the CIM user.

User login data is imported into Data Mart as well and therefore tables providing number of logins per user can be generated to help understand CIM usage by employee.

Data Mart Example Report

Another example report that was built internally in the Data Mart is a dashboard that contains (from left to right) ILI Features by Division, Anomalies by Action classification, a matrix table providing the number of features per category and classification (identified by ILI reports) in the top row and the inspection mileage by pipeline division and year, digs by pipeline division and repairs by pipeline system in the bottom row. This is one of thousands of report options that can be created within the Data Mart.

We’re excited to see all the different customized reports that CIM users create to help them better manage the integrity of their systems. Stay tuned for additional training materials associated with the Data Mart, as it becomes available in the next CIM release – 3.43.
